"New York designer Walter Rossi believes he has solved the problem of creating comfortable
furniture that can also stand the test of time. Rossi's background in blacksmithing (his
father ran a forge in Italy) and his training as an architect came into play when he
created his Soft Metal collection of indoor/outdoor upholstered metal chairs, stools, and
benches. Rossi's furniture designs reflect a decidedly whimsical, minimalist bent. His
padded Ladder bench, for example, gently curves like the mountains of the Marche region of
Italy where he was born. But the pieces are also sturdy, made of raw iron that is coated
with polymer to shine in some spots while showing darker oxidation in others. "Metal
is like marble," says Rossi of his sculpted designs. "People live with it for a
long time. I want them to have something that will make them smile, even when they're not
sitting down."
